How to Copy Text From a Video in Your Browser

Updated · By A17Lab

Most of the videos you'd want text from live in a browser tab: YouTube tutorials, online course players, TikTok on the web, documentation videos, embedded demos. Downloading the video just to OCR it is overkill when you need one code snippet or one address. For that, a Chrome extension that copies text from videos is the fastest path — no download, no app switch.

The in-browser workflow with TextSnap

  1. Add TextSnap to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store (works on any Chromium browser: Edge, Brave, Arc).
  2. Pause the video on the frame with the text — the code slide in a tutorial, the recipe overlay, the URL on screen.
  3. Trigger TextSnap and drag over the region. The OCR reads exactly what you selected — video, image, or even text that a site has made unselectable.
  4. Paste. The recognized text is on your clipboard, ready for Notes, a doc, or a terminal.

Bonus: it defeats copy-blocking. Because TextSnap reads pixels, it also grabs text from sites that disable selection, from images of text, and from PDFs rendered in the browser — anything you can see, you can copy.

Extension or full app: which one when?

Common browser captures

Code from a paused YouTube tutorial, coupon codes and URLs flashed in videos, ingredient lists in web TikToks, quotes from lecture slides in an online course player, error messages in a screencast someone linked you. If it's on your screen inside Chrome, it's two clicks from your clipboard.

Pause. Snap. Paste.

TextSnap for Chrome — copy text from videos and images without leaving the browser. Free on the Chrome Web Store.
