How to Extract Text From a Screen Recording
Screen recordings are where text goes to become unsearchable. A colleague records a bug and the error message you need is pixels in an MP4. A demo call captures the exact settings walkthrough, but you can't copy a single value from it. A recorded webinar holds twenty slides of content you'd have to retype. Here's how to extract text from a screen recording and make it usable again.
The workflow
- Get the recording on your device. Your own iPhone screen recordings are already in Photos; AirDrop or save recordings people send you. MP4 and MOV both work.
- Import into Extract Text From Video (free on the App Store). Recordings up to about 15 minutes are the sweet spot — trim longer ones to the relevant section first.
- Scan. The AI OCR reads every frame: UI labels, terminal output, error dialogs, chat bubbles, slide bullets. Screen recordings are OCR's easiest material — crisp digital text, no camera blur — so accuracy is at its best.
- Copy or export. Grab the one error string you need, or export the whole recording's text to TXT.
Where this saves real time
- Bug reports: pull the full error message and stack trace out of a recorded repro instead of asking the reporter to retype it.
- Recorded meetings and webinars: slide content becomes searchable notes (the same trick works on YouTube lectures).
- Tutorials and onboarding videos: commands and settings copied character-perfect.
- Chat and email shown on screen: capture referenced text without re-requesting it.
Sensitive by default: screen recordings routinely contain internal tools, names, and credentials — exactly the content you shouldn't feed an online converter. The Extract Text From Video app reads the text on your device, never uploads the recording, and needs no connection for OCR.
Tip: record at full quality
OCR accuracy tracks text sharpness. iPhone screen recordings are natively sharp; for recordings of desktop apps, record at native resolution rather than a compressed re-share, and avoid recording a video of a screen with your camera when a proper screen recording is possible. If all you have is a photo of a screen, the app's photo OCR with cropping handles that too.
